Gluten free fish and chips in Kent

In the list of life’s greatest pleasures, eating gluten free fish and chips straight from the box whilst sitting on the beach must rank very much towards the top.

Even for the gluten eaters, and even in poor British weather, it’s a real treat. But finding coeliac safe fish and chips – using dedicated fryers – is not always easy.

An easy day trip from London – either from London Victoria, or on the High Speed train from London St Pancras – takes you to Herne Bay; Whitstable’s less glitzy, but arguably more creative neighbour on the north Kent Coast.

Long before we day-tripped down, I’d read many reviews of the coeliac safe fish and chips at Shakey Shakey. There had been unanimous praise for how incredibly tasty the fish and chips here were. I was keen to find out if they were right.

Shakey Shakey is on the High Street in Herne Bay, a couple of blocks back from the beach.

Our very fresh fish and chips were cooked to order by the super friendly staff.

While we waited we were given a small portion of chips, along with the special Shakey Shakey salt, including one identified for gluten free customers.

The batter was extremely crispy and not too thick.

These were also possibly the best chip shop chips I’ve ever had because they weren’t oily or greasy at all.

The pot in the photo is the Shakey Shakey sprinkles. I HIGHLY recommend these. I asked for the coeliac safe version.

The gluten free fish and chips at Shakey Shakey are coeliac safe because separate fryers are used.

They also offer gluten free fish and chips every day of the week and no need to to order in advance.
