A Rather Random (Gluten Free) Tour of Italy

Mr D and I decided to make the most of the bumper 11 day break for 3 days’ annual leave created by the Easter, Royal Wedding and May Bank Holidays falling together.

We hatched a cunning plan: London to Sicily, preferably by train.

It was a trip full of lemons

And one too many Campari & orange drinks. I pray I don’t see another caper this side of Christmas…

Sadly, we left it a bit too late to book the train tickets from London to Rome. Easter, Rome, imminent beatification of Pope John Paul II….well you can imagine. Busy, busy, busy. So we flew from London to Rome.

We stopped in Rome for the night and then picked up the overnight train from Rome to Sicily. This is the cool bit; the train goes ON the ferry from mainland Italy to Sicily. Mr D was very excited by this. He tells me this is one of the few ferries left in the world which takes train carriages on board.

Once we arrived in Sicily we took a hydrofoil from Milazzo to the stunning Aeolian island of Salina for a few days R&R.

We then returned to Milazzo and took a train from there for a couple of nights in Palermo on Sicily’s north coast.

From Palermo we boarded a car ferry for the 20 hour crossing to Genoa on Italy’s Riviera. After an overnight stop, we flew back to London from Genoa.
